Bu! Kakke - IS ALWAYS FADING

sculptural installation,environmental dimensions

Is Always Fading continues the sculptural investigation initiated with the earlier Bukkake works, transforming the language of celebration cakes into autonomous sculptural forms.

While maintaining the exaggerated decorative vocabulary typical of festive cakes (cream, ornaments, pastel colors and ornamental excess), the works subtly shift their meaning. The shapes evoke the visual codes of the bukkake genre, in which multiple ejaculations accumulate over a single body. Here, however, the reference is displaced from the body to the object itself.

The cakes appear to celebrate themselves. Their surfaces overflow with decorative elements that seem to multiply endlessly, turning ornament into a form of self-referential excess. What in pornography is directed toward another body becomes here a closed circuit: an auto-erotic gesture performed by the sculpture upon itself.

At the same time the works retain the ambiguous nature of celebration cakes: objects normally produced to mark a specific moment, a birthday, a ceremony, an event. Yet in sculpture this moment is suspended. The cake no longer belongs to a fleeting occasion but becomes a permanent object, endlessly repeating its own act of celebration.

The work won the Moroso Award for Contemporary Art and was meant to be presented at HangarBicocca in Milan. It was censored when the artist refused to soften its original title, Dej ga notr, vadi ga van! – Bukkake. It was then exhibited at Moroso in New York.
