KARA OK!

performative installation, slide projector, amplifier, mixer, microphone, infrared lamp, 02:35 loop

Dragana Sapanjoš, KARA OK!, 2013 – videoWatch on YouTube →

KaraOK! stages an impossible attempt at synchronization. An elegantly dressed man sits facing a fireplace that functions as a projection surface. Holding a remote control, he repeatedly tries to match projected text with the music of Tainted Love by Soft Cell. The backing track, containing only the vocal harmonies, plays continuously in loop. The performer waits for the exact moment to change the slide and align image and sound, yet the synchronization never fully occurs. Each attempt fails by a fraction of a second, transforming the act of karaoke into a persistent gesture of near-success.

A heating infrared lamp glows beside him, intensifying the sense of duration and endurance. The performance unfolds as a quiet struggle between anticipation and impossibility, where the performer remains trapped in an endless rehearsal of a moment that can never arrive.

On loop while making it: only its own sound.
