Paradiso e Inferno
A sense of disturbance is often present in Dragana Sapanjoš’s work, whether through disruptions to the technological transmission devices used in some of her works or through the unpleasant sensations experienced by viewers. In some spatial and sound installations, for example, excessively quiet or loud sounds placed viewers in an uncomfortable position. In another recent video installation, titled I love you – In Circle, an overly insistent, shouted declaration of love provokes feelings of aggression, emotional blackmail and oppression in the viewer. For Dragana Sapanjoš, art is a space of intense physical and psychological proximity, an almost cramped zone of direct, and often painful, confrontation between the artist and her audience. It offers an opportunity for a relationship at the margins of mass communication, one that unfolds along the delicate thread of a one-to-one encounter, like an excessively forceful embrace.
