Dragana Sapanjoš, REVERB, 2010 – videoWatch on YouTube →

Reverb is a performance developed with a community of deaf participants. Inside the room the group converses among themselves in sign language, completely ignoring the presence of the audience. Visitors enter the space and find themselves in the position of silent observers. The only sound that fills the room is the physical impact of hands in the articulation of sign language: a sound never intended for listeners, but produced by the body itself.

At irregular intervals the artist enters the space. Her presence abruptly changes the atmosphere. The group reacts with anger and hostility, confronting the artist with aggressive gestures, shouts and fragmented sounds. When the artist leaves, the tension dissolves and the conversation resumes. The situation repeats itself continuously, forming a cycle that lasts until the last spectator exits the room.

Reverb shifts the usual hierarchy between observer and observed. The audience remains outside a language it cannot access, while the artist becomes the target of a reaction that embodies the tension between visibility, marginalization and social distance.

Presented in the room adjoining Make Your Own Kind of Music, Reverb forms its counterpoint. In one room, an unseen presence becomes perceptible through sound; in the other, a visible conversation remains inaccessible to those unfamiliar with sign language. The sounds produced by the participants’ bodies reach the hearing audience but offer no translation, and are not heard by those who produce them: a reverberation that never returns to its source. Between the two rooms, seeing and hearing cease to guarantee access.
