La ruota di Duchamp gira nel parco dell’arte
Ever since Disneyland, theme parks have made us feel like Lilliputians wandering among structures brought from fantasy into reality. With PoMeCa, Park of Modern & Contemporary Art, Dragana Sapanjoš, born in Koper in 1979 and a graduate of Brera the previous year, takes the opposite route: she miniaturises the “seven wonders” of contemporary art, from Duchamp’s wheel to Matthew Barney’s airships, turning them into sideshow attractions.
Her park is a large, all-white model suspended in mid-air, into which visitors can insert their heads to examine the details up close. Beyond the elegantly lunar setting, the urge to mock her own masters and to moralise about art’s tendency towards circus spectacle reveals, above all, a good dose of caustic teen spirit: the adolescent spirit sung about by Nirvana in the very song from which Sapanjoš “steals” the exhibition’s title, Here we are now, entertainers.
