DRIVE THROUGH

urban project12 artists – 12 billboards, Istria
Drive Through is a format conceived by Dragana Sapanjoš, who also curated the project and invited twelve contemporary artists to present their works on billboards installed along the region's main roads. On the occasion of the International Artist Day (25 October 2020), the main Istrian roads were transformed into a large open-air gallery, displacing art from institutional spaces and digital platforms into the shared landscape of everyday life.
Conceived during the pandemic, when access to museums and galleries was severely limited, the project proposed an alternative form of encounter: artworks appeared unexpectedly along familiar routes, interrupting the visual language of advertising and marketing.
Billboards, typically vehicles of consumption, became temporary carriers of artistic meaning, offering travellers and passers-by moments of attention, reflection and visual interruption within both urban and rural environments.
